What is PCBS?
PCBS stands for Public Cellular Blocking Service, a Government initiative to enable blocking of mobile phones reported lost or stolen in Malaysia.
How do I make use of PCBS?
Once a mobile phone is reported lost or stolen, the phone becomes blocked across all networks nationwide even if the SIM card is replaced.
Can I be excluded from this service?
Subscribers are not required to sign up for this service. It is available to all subscribers by default and currently paid for by the cellular operator.
How does PCBS work?
- The PCBS uses the International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) number of the mobile phone to block or unblock lost or stolen mobile phones.
- To block or unblock the mobile phone, you would need to make a request to us.
- Upon receiving the request to block or unblock, we take the necessary steps to initiate the blocking or unblocking process.
What is an IMEI number
All GSM mobile phones have a unique identity number known as the IMEI which is a unique 15 digit code.
How do I get the IMEI number for my phone?
The IMEI is usually found printed inside the battery compartment of the handset or on the original packaging/box. The number can also be retrieved on the display screen of most GSM mobile phones by entering *#06# into the keypad. Although in most cases, it is not necessary to provide this IMEI number to us when reporting a lost or stolen mobile phone, you are strongly recommended to write down the IMEI number and keep it in a safe place in the event you want to report the loss or theft of the phone.
Do I have to register my IMEI number for PCBS?
The IMEI number is usually stored automatically in Maxis’ system. However, the mobile phone owners are advised to register their ownership details in advance on www.blockmyphone.my portal in order to increase the likelihood of reuniting them with their lost phones should it be recovered by the authorities or trusted third parties such as the “Lost and Found” departments of public transportation organizations, shopping malls etc.
Is this online registration free?
Yes, this online ownership registration is a simple and effective service that is provided free of charge to the Malaysian public.
What happens if my IMEI number is already registered by another user?
Such cases may happen due to a number of reasons.
- The IMEI number can be duplicated on more than one device. This happens with non-type approved mobile phone devices manufactured by small, non-mainstream manufacturers. However, the percentage of such cases worldwide is low in relation to the total number of mobile phone devices in existence.
- Another user may have registered it as belonging to him by accident.
- It is registered by a previous owner of a device that has since been sold off or given to somebody else.
In these cases, the www.blockmyphone.my portal would promptly inform the registrant that the IMEI number/mobile phone device in question has been registered by another user. The notification is purely for informational purposes and the registrant may still proceed with the registration of that device.
What should I do if I sell or give away my mobile phone?
You should deregister your mobile phone device at www.blockmyphone.my and ensure your records remain updated, including details of any new mobile phone device. Remember to remind the purchaser or recipient of your previous mobile phone device to register their selves and/or update their details on www.blockmyphone.my so that they too can enjoy the full benefits of this free service.
Can I highlight my phone as stolen on www.blockmyphone.my portal?
Yes, the www.blockmyphone.my portal has a feature for phone owners to instantly update their status of their mobile phone device as lost or stolen. The update alone will not block the mobile phone device.
To ensure that the mobile phone SIM and the device are blocked across all networks nationwide, it is essential that the loss is reported to us and also to the police, in cases where a crime is involved. You have to specifically request from us to block the phone.
What do I do if my phone is lost or stolen?
- Immediately report it to us to first block the SIM card and request for the mobile phone to be blocked.
- If a crime is involved, please make a police report without delay and ensure that the IMEI number is included in the police report.
- If you have registered your ownership details on the www.blockmyphone.my portal, remember to update your device status as lost/stolen.
What should I do if I’ve recovered the phone I reported previously as lost/stolen?
Will there be any fees for the inter-carrier IMEI blocking service?
No, this service is provided at no charge to the public.
Can PCBS choose not to block a mobile phone that is reported as lost/stolen?
In some very exceptional cases, for instance those involving cloned/duplicate IMEIs or under the instructions of law enforcement authorities; PCBS may choose not to block a mobile device even though it is reported as having been lost or stolen.
How soon will my phone be blocked from the time I notify Maxis of its loss?
Currently there is no accurate time frame for the blocking or unblocking of mobile phones as it involves many parties.
If blocking of a phone is uncertain, will consumers be charged for any illegal calls despite having reported their phones as stolen?
As soon as a consumer reports their phone as lost or stolen, the SIM card is deactivated preventing calls being billed to their account. This process is separate from the blocking of the mobile phone device itself. As such the consumer should first and foremost ensure their SIM card is blocked when their phone is lost or stolen.
Once a mobile phone is blocked on PCBS, will it eventually be unblocked after a period of time?
No, once blocked, a mobile phone will remain blocked until a legitimate unblock request is made.
