Frequently Asked Questions

VoWiFi for Hotlink

  • Voice over WiFi (VoWiFi) is a voice call service that uses Voice over IP (VoIP) technologies from mobile devices connected across a WiFi connection. You can use this service to make HD quality calls via any local WiFi connection without the use of an app.

  • Voice over WiFi (VoWiFi) allows you to receive and make calls over a WiFi network on your Maxis mobile line when mobile signal is limited or absent. While you move between strong 4G coverage network and weak or no Wi-Fi signal, the call will continue without any interruption.

  • Effective 16 December 2021, all Hotlink customers will be provisioned with VoWiFi service. Do check if your phone is compatible over Maxis VoWiFi.

  • VoWiFi is dependent on WiFi networks and WiFi connections may lag with inadequate signal strength especially crowded venues, i.e. malls, hotels, airports, universities & cafe.

As VoWiFi is an IP call, seamless handover to cellular calls at 2G coverage areas is not possible when users move to a weak WiFi signal corner with 2G coverage only.

Apart from this, some devices do not support VoWiFi, hence users will need to have a compatible device before using this service.

  • Different phones may have different steps to enable VoWiFi.

    In general:
From your phone, click at SETTINGS > MOBILE NETWORK > Enable WiFi Calling/VoWiFi

If your phone does not have this option, it may not support Maxis VoWiFi. Do ensure that your phone is updated with the latest software.

  • LTE-SIM is required to enjoy VoWiFi, to check if you’re on LTE-SIM:

    Hotlink Unlimited, dial *100*6*1*4#
Hotlink Video or Pantas, dial *100*6*1*5#
    Other plans, dial *100*6*1*6#

  • Calls within Malaysia will be charged according to the standard call rates according to your rateplan.

If your Mobile plan is bundled with voice minutes, VoWiFi calls will utilize those minutes. In the absence of bundled voice minutes, you will be charged at Pay-Per-Use rate.

  • VoWiFi calls do not utilize any data quota.

  • Yes, you can make international calls or internal direct dial (IDD) with VoWiFi and will be charged according to your rate plan or standard rates.

  • VoWiFi while roaming is not available.

  • VoLTE or Voice Over 4G LTE network offers superior voice quality as compared to VoWiFi. You can still browse while being on a call. It has multitasking capabilities to switch between apps, such as video calling, multimedia file sharing, images and phone calls simultaneously at the fastest speed.

VoWiFi uses the WiFi network to make calls in HD. VoWiFi improves call reliability indoors, regardless of your mobile signal strength.

  • Yes, if you have been using VoLTE and  have enabled VoWiFi on your phone settings, you may make and receive calls over WiFi network.

  • iPhone 12 is compatible with Maxis VoWiFi with the latest version of software. Once your iPhone is updated with the latest software, please go to settings, tap on Mobile Data, then tap WiFi Calling to enable the service.

  • You should be able to use the service with any WiFi signals; it is also subject to WiFi  service provider as voice calls can be blocked by the WiFi provider with router configuration.

  • Yes, you will be able to make VoWiFi calls and browse at the same time as long you connected to a WiFi network.

  • Yes, Call waiting and call holding features are expected to work as per normal.

  • Yes, Call Forwarding is voice call feature, it is not related to VoWiFi.

  • Video calls are based on device capabilities. Yes, you can make video calls with VoWiFi if it is supported on your device.

  • You need to check if your phone model is compatible with Maxis VoWiFi and updated with latest software/firmware update, if yes, please go to settings and check if WiFi -Calling has been enabled.

  • You must be connected to a WiFi network to use VoWiFi. Please check if you are logged in to your friend’s home WiFi network.
